Robert Hammerle, a well-known and respected criminal defense attorney, has joined Indianapolis law firm Pence Hensel LLC in an of-counsel capacity.

Mr. Hammerle has practiced criminal law for more than 40 years in Indianapolis and throughout Indiana. He has represented clients in more than 100 jury trials and has helped clients secure not-guilty verdicts in federal and state courts from South Bend to Indianapolis to New Albany.

"We are delighted to add to our firm someone of Bob's stature and experience," said Linda L. Pence. "His storied career in handling the often-demanding, rigorous criminal defense cases is a perfect fit for the complex criminal and civil litigation for which our firm is best known."

Ms. Pence and David J. Hensel established Pence Hensel in 2010 to provide corporate, business and professional clients with critical representation for a wide range of legal matters, including white collar crime, fraud and civil business litigation, as well as professional licensing issues.

"It's an honor to join a firm led by two lawyers who have contributed greatly to the legal profession here in Indianapolis and Indiana," Mr. Hammerle said. "There is nobody I admire more than Linda and David. I've known both of them for many years, and this new adventure gives me a chance to work alongside them."

Mr. Hensel said that Mr. Hammerle's arrival brings a new dimension to the firm. "Between the three of us, we will have the experience necessary for virtually any kind of litigation where clients need experienced counsel to efficiently and effectively handle their matters."

About Robert Hammerle

An Indiana native from Batesville, Mr. Hammerle was motivated to pursue a legal career after watching famed defense lawyer Atticus Finch portrayed in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and actor Spencer Tracy's role as a lawyer in "Inherit the Wind."

Mr. Hammerle began his legal career in 1973 after graduating from the I.U. McKinney School of Law. During his first 10 years of private practice, Mr. Hammerle served simultaneously as a part-time public defender in the Marion County Criminal Courts.

Over the years, Mr. Hammerle has represented a number of high-profile defendants in a variety of cases. Mr. Hammerle has handled cases involving murder and death penalty, forfeiture, grand jury investigations, juvenile matters, complex securities fraud cases, appellate representations, traffic infractions, DUI, and other general criminal defense matters. Mr. Hammerle treats every client as his most important client and approaches a legal argument on a speeding ticket as important as an oral argument before the Indiana Supreme Court.

Besides his deep knowledge of criminal defense law, Mr. Hammerle also finds time to provide commentary on social issues on the local cable television show, "Opinions," and as a movie critic for The Indiana Lawyer.
