**UPDATE: Rally/Demonstration in support of Bei Bei Shuai scheduled for April 6, 2013 in Indianapolis. Visit the Facebook event page, RSVP, and voice your support!
On December 23, 2010, Bei Bei Shuai, a pregnant woman with no criminal history, attempted to commit suicide by consuming rat poison. Because of the persistence of friends, she received medical treatment, and doctors believed that Bei Bei and her fetus would survive. Despite her and her doctor's hopeful efforts, Bei Bei's newborn died in her arms on January 3, 2011.
On March 14, 2011, the State of Indiana charged Bei Bei with murder and attempted feticide and put her in the Marion County Jail. 435 days later, Bei Bei was released from jail on a $50,000 bond. Although she is no longer in a prison cell, she must wear a GPS monitor that tracks her location until the trial and costs $12 a day to maintain.
Bei Bei will go to trial for murder in September 2013. If convicted, she may be given a sentence of 45 to 65 years in prison.
But this prosecution, while directed against Bei Bei, affects all women and the people who love them throughout the world. It could have the effect of making all pregnant women criminally liable for any actions they may or may not have taken during their pregnancy. As in Bei Bei's case, this could extend to actions or inactions involving the mother's mental health.
Bei Bei's fate could affect pregnant women for years to come. And she cannot fight these unjust charges without substantial financial help.
To aid in her defense, Bei Bei has authorized the creation of the Bei Bei Shuai Defense Fund. Your gifted donations will be used to pay for the substantial legal expenses necessary to challenge the State's prosecution and secure her freedom.
Every donation, large or small, will help support Bei Bei through this critical time. Countless people have already shown their support, including religious groups, health professionals, women's rights organizations, and many others in Indiana and around the world.
Donations are deposited directly to a legal defense fund bank account controlled by Bei Bei's lawyers to ensure the money will be used solely to fund her defense, including medical, psychiatric, and scientific experts' fees, multiple depositions, witness fees, transcripts, trial preparation costs, professional fees, and other expenses.
For a fair and thorough defense, Bei Bei needs financial help. Even small donations could make a big difference.
